Bheeshma Ekadasi
CHILDREN, about five thousand years ago, we had a great warrior in our history. He took an oath of celibacy for life and also promised his father to protect the heir of his father’s throne. He was blessed by his father and thus got a boon to choose the time of his own death. Can you guess who? Yes, you are correct. It is none other than the great Bheeshma:cha:rya. He was the grandfather of Pa:ndavas and Kauravas. During the great war at Kurukshe:tra, he supported the Kauravas in the battlefield because of his vow and fought against the Pa:ndavas. On the 10th day Arjuna defeated him. Bheeshma fell down and his entire body became a pincushion of Arjuna's arrows. He lay down on the 'bed of arrows' till the end of the battle. At the request of Lord Krishna, he preached Sri Vishnu Sahasranama stho:thram to the Pa:ndavas. This was recorded by the great sage Ve:da Vya:sa in the holy scripture “ Maha:bha:rat”. That day is celebrated as Sri Vishnu Sahasrana:ma Jayanthi. It occurs in the month named “Ma:gha” as per the vedic calendar on the 11th day, i.e., on Ekadasi day. This day is also called Bheeshma Ekadasi. Children, we celebrated Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Jayanthi this year on _29th Jan 2007. Let us all join in reciting Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Stho:thram on that day and get divine - Smt Radha
